When our new Labour Prime Minister stood on the steps of Downing Street, he promised to restore Trust in politics.
However less than three months later the truth is out he has received Free tickets to football matches, Free clothes worth thousands, Free designer glasses, Free clothing for his wife all these totalling more than £100,000. All these gifts given to someone who is a millionaire in his own right and has a £165,000 plus expenses yearly salary, and he was also late to declare a the donation by a Labour peer who paid for the dresses for his wife. The Prime Minister had to change his declaration on the thousands of pounds of clothes donated by a Labour peer after it was queried by parliament’s authorities.
The Labour leader originally put the £16,200 donation from former ASOS boss Lord Alli down as ‘private support for the office of the leader of the opposition’ and listed it under the category of ‘any other support’ in the register of MPs’ financial interests.
But a month later, Sir Keir altered the entry, admitting in May this year the donation was of work clothing, valued at £16,200 and classifying it as ‘gifts, benefits and hospitality’. Former Standards Committee member Andy Carter said there were serious questions to be answered about why the gift was not registered accurately in the first place. Angela Rayner the deputy prime minister and Chancellor Rachel Reeves have also received gifts and clothing worth thousands Asked about the decision by herself and her cabinet colleagues to accept thousands of pounds worth of clothes, hospitality and gifts, the deputy prime minister said: “MPs have accepted gifts and donations for years. All MPs do it”.
However they both declared them as generic support for their work. The latest developments further call into question the Prime Minister promise to lead a government of transparency only two months into his tenure Labour officials initially refused to comment on a June donation in kind for undertaking parliamentary duties to Rayner worth £3,550 from Labour chief fundraiser Lord Waheed Alli, before admitting 30 hours later that the donation was clothing. Parliamentary rules state that the nature of any donations “in kind” should be detailed. In addition, Reeves received £7,500 from a donor called Juliet Rosenfeld in four instalments from January 2023 to May 2024 that was used to pay for clothing, according to people with knowledge of the gifts. They were registered as donations to support the shadow chancellor’s office Alli, a wealthy Labour peer and the party’s head of fundraising, is in the spotlight after revelations that Starmer initially failed to declare clothing gifts worth £16,200 from the media tycoon and £5,000 of clothing for his wife. Rayner is one of seven cabinet ministers that received donations from Alli in the run-up to the July 4 general election, including foreign secretary David Lammy, health secretary Wes Streeting, and energy secretary Ed Miliband. The deputy prime minister has taken three other donations from the entrepreneur in the past year in addition to the £3,550 “donation in kind” in June. Rayner received £8,500 last October, £8,250 in March and £900 in April, all of which were declared as money “to support me in my capacity as deputy leader of the Labour party”. Some of that money was spent on work clothes for major political events, according to Labour officials. They only confirmed that Alli’s “donation in kind” to Rayner was items of work clothing after the FT published an article raising questions about the gift. Party officials also told the FT that Reeves had re-examined the Rosenfeld donations in light of recent press coverage and contacted the registrar to confirm whether those gifts had been correctly declared.
They are all very sorry, they are even more sorry you got know about these gifts, they are so sorry they will not be accepting any more gifts of clothes. They are being very specific about rejecting offers of clothes, I suppose that means they are still open to accepting other gifts.
So, when all of our shivering pensioners struggling to pay their heating bills this winter because the government chose to remove their Winter Fuel payment just think about Sir Keir he will be sitting in his centrally heated private box watching his favourite football team Free of charge
